Healthy Homemade Taco Seasoning
After looking at the back of a packet of taco seasoning, I was shocked at some of the ingredients listed as most are not even spices. Instead, I saw it was chalked full of preservatives and other unhealthy, unnecessary addictive such as modified cornstarch, yellow corn flour, citric acid, and yeast extract. Um, no thank you!
I knew I needed to start making my own instead.
Turns out making your own taco seasoning is simple and uses spices you likely already have in your pantry. Furthermore, it only uses real spices, no flour or preservatives, so it’s gluten-free and friendly to any diet or allergy. Not adding fillers to the mix allows the favors of the individual spices to shine, making your dishes much more flavorful and delicious.

What Spices are in this Healthy Homemade Taco Seasoning
I created this recipe using spices already in my spice drawer. I also wanted the spice mix to have big, bold flavor, a little smokey and a little spicy, so it would elevate taco night or any dish! It does just that and tastes way better than the salty taco packets.

Here is what I used:
- Chili Powder, for that quintessential taco flavor
- Cumin, for that earthy, nutty, spicy taste
- Garlic and Onion Powder, for extra flavor to make the seasoning bled sing
- Salt, helps make the other flavors shine
- Pepper, a little extra kick
- Oregano and coriander, for a little herbaceous punch
- Hungarian hot paprika or cayenne, for extra spice
- smoked paprike, for smokiness
If there are any spices you don’t like or don’t have on hand, you can reduce or eliminate. The great thing about healthy homemade taco seasoning is you can customize it to your liking. The only must include ingredient is the chili powder!
