Hands down, Beautycounter is my favorite skin care and makeup brand. Their products are absolutely magical – after using them for a few months, my skin was transformed. It became clearer, smoother, and more radiant.
But that’s only a small reason why I love this brand. My main draw to Beautycounter is because of their mission: to to get cleaner, safer beauty products in the hands of everyone. It was for this powerful reason I decided to clean up my skin care routine and become a Beautycounter consultant.

So let’s talk about what clean beauty means….
A year ago, a friend from law school reached out to tell me about Beautercounty and the opportunity to become a consultant. To be honest, I initially wasn’t interested. I had a well established daily skin care and makeup routine and had no intention of changing it. I was also weary of the idea of becoming a consultant and selling beauty products. I didn’t want to be “that person” trying to sell all my followers and friends makeup when my goal was to provide delicious, clean recipes.
But then my friend told me more about the reason why Beautycounter started the company and this concept of clean beauty. What I learned was pretty disturbing.
The Issues with Our Current Beauty Industry
My friend explained that there is actually very little government regulation over the beauty industry and only 30 chemicals have been banned in the US beauty industry. Let’s put that in to context. 88,000 chemicals have been introduced since World War II. The EU has banned close to 1,400 of these chemicals. But the US has only banned 30. ONLY 30! Why are we so behind the times? What’s even worse is that less than 10% of these chemicals (chemicals that we put on our bodies every day) have actually been tested for human safety. What?!

Now you may be thinking that my products say they are “natural”, “organic”, or “botanical”, so there is no way they contain these harmful ingredients. Unfortunately, that’s not necessarily true. The word “natural” legally mean nothing in the beauty industry as there is no standards on the term. Basically, a company can call a product natural by simply using one or two natural ingredients in it although its primarily made up of of chemicals that are harmful or unnatural. Sadly, heavy metals are common ingredients in our makeup, even our mineral based ones. The Food and Drug Administration (the “FDA”), the agency that is supposed to regulate this industry, doesn’t even have the power to recall a product! Moreover, the FDA has done very little to keep this industry in check. There hasn’t been a major federal law governing the ingredients in personal care products since 1938. This $70 BILLION dollar industry is currently being governed by 1.5 pages of law.
The reason why we should care about the use of these harmful chemicals in our products is because of the negative side effects that can cause. It’s been shown that the use of some these toxic chemicals are leading to serious health issues, including cancer and infertility.
That’s what stopped me in my tracks. At the time I learned about Beautycounter, I was dealing with some fertility issues and the doctors couldn’t provide a concrete reason why I was having issues. It never occurred to me that my face lotion or foundation could be the culprit.
I was shocked. And I was mad at myself. I gave so much thought about the ingredients that are in the food I put in my body every day, but never gave a second thought to what chemicals are in the products I put on my body every day.
I realized this was so much more than selling beauty products. This was making real, meaningful change. For me. My family. My friends. Most importantly, my son.

Beautycounter’s Mission
That’s why I decided to join Beautycounter; because they are crusading to clean up the beauty industry. How? For one, they have a never list – which is made up of over 1,500 questionable ingredients that they promise to never use in their products. They are very transparent about what ingredients they do use in their products and why. They are also lobbying and pushing law makers to pass more and stricter laws regulating the beauty industry.

They are leading a movement to a future where all beauty is clean beauty. Their collective mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. And it’s through the consultants, through me, to help make this change so no-one has to question their safety or their family’s safety when they simple get ready for the day.

What You Can Do to Help Make a Difference Too!
By writing this I’m not asking you to start exclusively buying Beautycounter’s products and change your whole routine. It’s not that easy. Trust me, I know! It took me sometime to make the switch and admittedly I do not yet exclusively use Beautycounter. But I think it’s important to start paying attention to what chemicals are being used in our products and try to slowly make the change to using cleaner products. If Beautycounter has it’s way, all products will be clean and we won’t even have to make a conscientious effort to check what’s in our products. But by paying attention now and demanding companies follow in Beautycounter’s footsteps, we will help effectuate this change.

I promise you will not be disappointed by trying Beautycounter’s products! Not only is the company championing real reform, they also produce amazing products by using good ingredients. If you want to give it a try, please let me know! I’m happy to send a sample. Also, you can check out all of their products HERE
I hope you found this post helpful and are motivated to clean up your own beauty routine. It’s time we all pay attention to not only what we put in our bodies, but what we put on our bodies as well!
